2.) Type your name at the top of the box.

3.) Copy and past the first question into a reply to this blog

4.) Respond to the question in one full paragraph

5.) Copy and paste the second question into another reply to this blog

7.) Review the responses of your classmates

8.) Choose 2 of your classmates whose responses are most thought provoking to you

I think the theme to the story is be carefull with what you wish for. One reason I think this is herbert died because of the first wish. I think the family would be much better off without the paw.

I think that this story revolved around both coincidence and magic. One example of magic is that herbert died and the Whites got 500 dollars. one example of coincidence is that no one was at the door when the Whites heard knocking. I could probably go either way.

  4. What is the theme of the story?
As I read that this couple used their last two wishes to reverse the consequences of the first, I assumed the author simply had attached the moral “be careful what you wish for” into a horror story. Then I considered Mr. White’s actions as opposed to that of his visitor’s, the Sergeant who brought along the talisman to begin with. When his son pressed him to find something to wish for, his first thought was “It seems to me I have all I need”. This gives me the impression that if it were his choice to make alone, he wouldn’t be collecting the 200 pounds. Then I looked closer into how the visitor let the monkey’s paw get into the White’s possession. If he is so wary of the evil inside it, would that not have stopped him from bringing it along “for fancy”? A few paragraphs later I sensed some reverse psychology. Morris tosses it onto the fire, relinquishing ownership of the wish-giver. By telling his friend he’d better let it burn, Mr. White is curious enough to stoop down and snatch it up. The sergeant-major has to know that, with the dark and magical tale he spun around the talisman, it would be of interest to everyone listening. I believe he feels compelled to pass the misfortunes he’s experienced down to another family, instead of safely doing away with it at a time no one else is around to pick it back up.
